    Editors note:

Dredges are truly modern marvels. Without them our harbors would silt up, no boat could pass and there would be no trade. Dredges use the sand from the harbor bottoms to build airports (JFK and Logan), harbors (Dubai, Port Elizabeth, Houston), beaches (Jones Beach), barrier reefs (like the ones that protect Venice), Parks and even the Saturn Moon Base.

In addition, they keep our rivers flowing by cutting through "S" curves and lessen the chances of flooding. They build dykes that preserve peoples homes and farms. Dredges are truly "Modern Marvels".

Ask and Dutchman about the importance of dredges for half of the Netherlands is built on dredged land, protected dredge created dykes that keep out the sea. Why wasn't the money authorized for the Corp of Engineers to build the dykes to protect New Orleans and the Gulf Coast from Katrinka? Ask President Bush. He had other priorities.

There are essentially four different kinds of dredges:

    1. ClamShell Dredge
This dredge works with two large interconnected "clamshells". They are dropped into the bottom open. The two shells are then closed by the operator and the sand, mud or gravel between the closing shells is scooped up and the lifted to the surface and put into a barge or container ship for transporting to the area to be filled or dyked.

    2. Dipper Dredge
A Dipper (or Bucket) dredge is essentially a diesel-electric shovel on a barge with a long arm that can reach below the surface of the water and scoop up the sediment below. The material is then lifted to the surface, dropped into an open barge for transporting to a fill area.

    3. Hydraulic Dredge
These dredges contain a huge hydraulic pump connected to a pipe that is lowered to the bottom. The end of the pipe has a large revolving cutter blade the breaks up the sediment on the bottom and allows it to be sucked through the dredge and out a pipeline into a fill area. Some hydraulic dredges are so huge they can dig harbors and channels 100 feet deep and move mud and dirt almost 4 miles.

    4. Hopper Dredge
Hopper Dredges are self-contained vessels. The ship has an onboard digging mechanism, usually hydraulic and the holding tanks for the dredged material. Once the holds are filled, the dredge moves to the fill area, opens the bottom of the hold and deposits the fill. Then it returns to the digging area for another load.
